Michael Allen, President:
As a native Tucsonan, my first experience with Broadmoor was going to Austin's Ice Cream Shop (before they expanded to its present size). Finding seating for some portion of my nine brothers and sisters sometimes was challenging, but we always prevailed
My mother's best friend, Frances O'Brien, lived on the corner of Eastbourne and Arroyo Chico. Sometimes Frances invited a couple of my brothers or sisters to her home for brunch. That is now my home since her son sold it to me in 1991 when Frances passed away. A few years later my wife Kathy joined me in my abode.
I started swimming at the St. Ambrose Swimming Pool with my family in the mid-60's. During those hot summer days, we diligently arrived when it opened at noon and stayed until it closed at 6pm. Once we joined the swimming team, our time spent at the pool increased. At times our grandfather would come to watch over us. After he passed away, my older brother, Dean, became a lifeguard. Dean took over the role of supervising us. One time my sister told him that I was swearing, so when we got home my brother spanked me. I still haven't forgiven her for tattle telling.
In spite of this, I began to appreciate the importance of community during these summer days. Everyday I looked forward to being with many friends from the pool. Our swim team won awards for its performance, creating a communal feel when we arrived for practices or meets.
This spirit of community and togetherness
encouraged me to accept being the newly elected
second vice-president of the Broadmoor Neighborhood Association.
I hope that I represent our Community well.
Karen Martin, 2nd Vice President
Broadmoor is a terrific gem of a neighborhood and my husband David and I have been proud to call it home for the past four years.
I agree with Michael. It's the connection we have with each other that makes living here special and rewarding. Our neighborhood offers many avenues for socializing and volunteering: The Fourth of July Parade, fund raising for neighborhood upgrades, association meetings and the new Meet Yourself. New arrivals and old-timers, we want to connect with you all.
You can catch me most any day walking my dog, Roxanne, in the cool of the morning or evening. She is the badly behaved one who loves people but not other dogs. If you see us, please say "hi" and ask about ways you can get involved.
Mary Mieler, Secretary:
I live at 2733 E Malvern with my significant other, Jud Whitnell. We have lived in the Broadmoor neighborhood for exactly one year, and I have been a Tucson resident for 17 years. Most of those years were spent in the Oro Valley area. I have two daughters: Jacki, age 28, who lives in Phoenix and Emily, age 22, who currently lives with Jud and I. Jud has two adult children and two grandchildren all residing in Sacramento.
Since I work at Pima County Superior Court, which is located downtown, I am thrilled to be living 10 minutes from my job. Whenever the weather allows and I have the motivation, I will ride my bicycle to work.
My involvement on the Board is a result of my interest in the historic preservation of our neighborhood and a desire to maintain the integrity of the Broadmoor area as a desirable place to live.
