Friday's Farmers Market at Broadway Village Opening June 5th
Indoor/Outdoor Market a Springboard to Continued Revitalization of
Arizona's Oldest Neighborhood Shopping Center
Tucson, Ariz. (May 22, 2009) New owners anticipate a strong turnout
for the launch of Friday's Farmers Market at Broadway Village, Tucson's
first indoor/outdoor farmers market, starting at 8 am on June 5th.
More than 40 Southern Arizona vendors will showcase products--from
locally-grown organic produce and grass-fed beef, to baked goods and
Sonoran-style hot dogs--for five hours on the 5th, announced Randall
Finfrock, managing partner for Broadway Village. Live music will be
provided by Amber Norgaard.
We've received overwhelming support for the farmers market from
surrounding neighbors, 94 said Finfrock, who is overseeing a three-year
plan to restore and reposition the 70-year old retail landmark.
According to Finfrock, the idea for a Farmers Market started to
germinate after he listened to neighbors reminisce about the virtues of Broadway
Village Market, closed now for 25 years. Back then, neighbors from
Broadmoor, Colonia Solana, Sam Hughes and El Encanto neighborhoods could
walk to Broadway Village to get a custom cut of beef from the butcher or
sit down at the drugstore counter to indulge in a Cowboy Burger and Green
River. In its heyday, Broadway Village was a neighborhood shopping center in
the truest sense of the term.
The long-term goal of Finfrock and his partners, including the DeConcini
Family, is to bring back those glory days with an old-fashioned
specialty grocery. In the mean time, he says the weekly farmers market will help
address the dearth of grocery services in the densely populated central
city and will dovetail with the growing nationwide popularity of whole foods
in general and farmers markets in particular.
Tucson has certainly seen its share of growth in the farmers market
segment, but some markets close for the summer, creating a timely opportunity for
Broadway Village to begin offering vendors and shoppers a unique
historical venue on a great shopping day. Vendors will be situated outdoors in
numerous shaded breezeways and landscaped courtyards, as well as inside 6,000
square feet of air-cooled space previously occupied by Table Talk.
Vacant commercial space is an unfortunate sign of the times, but
we re turning lemons into lemonade by offering Tucsonans a great place to stop
and shop on Friday mornings, catch a good cup of locally-roasted coffee and
a pastry, and get a jump on weekend entertaining with some really great,
fresh local products you can 92t find in traditional grocery stores,
Finfrock said.
Located at the southwest corner of Broadway Boulevard and Country Club Road in the heart of
Tucson, Broadway Village is Arizona's oldest neighborhood shopping center.
Designed by Josiah Joesler and built by Tucson's visionary developers John and
Helen Murphey, Broadway Village has been undergoing a restoration under new
local ownership since early 2008. It will celebrate its 70th year as a Tucson
landmark this fall.
Tucsonans with personal stories, photos or memorabilia relating to the
early days of Broadway Village are urged to stop by the Broadway Village booth
at Friday's Farmers Market between 8 am and 1 pm on Friday, June 5th. The
first 100 shoppers to stop by will also be eligible to receive a reusable
shopping tote, compliments of Broadway Village.
There really is no other place in Tucson quite like Broadway Village,
for its architectural and historical significance as well as its convenient
location to Downtown, UA and venerable inner-city neighborhoods,
Finfrock said. We welcome all Southern Arizonans to come out and enjoy this
Spanish mission treasure.
Starting June 5th, Friday's Farmers Market at Broadway Village will be
open year round every Friday, from 8 to 1, at the southwest corner of
Broadway and Country Club.
